Day 78 - Valletta, Malta
I've been under the weather for a few days. I haven't left the cabin for 3 days in a row. We had a change of plans and missed both Koper, Slovenia and Split, Croatia due to weather in the Adriatic. Many complain about the Captain's decisions. In fact, we have commented to each other that we have heard more complaining aboard this ship than others we have been on. It is NOT bad. It is an older ship so no modern aspects but honestly, the crew is amazing and attentive. Perhaps people just have a higher expectation about their personal comfort. Many complain about the temperature, some too hot then some too cold - really, dress in layers people!!!
We did stop in Kotor, Montenegro on April 5, but we did not get off. June has been there before and I was not up to it. Disappointing but I am thankful I can rest and have room service! Now we have had another sea day to rest and I am recovering. So, today I am going to get off in Malta. I will wear a mask, not sure it matters much but if I cough my mouth will automatically be covered to onlookers!
According to Acts 27-28 Paul was shipwrecked here in 60 AD, it is quite a story you can read here. The area is quite fascinating when you think about everything that has happened here for couple of thousand years! I am thankful we have been able to visit such an amazing place.
Malta is a beautiful place. We decided to take one loop of the Hop-On Hop-Off bus. What a treat. The city is amazing with some Northern African architecture apparent in the enclosed balconies all over the city and so much more. There were lines outside the few churches we saw that were open. Our 2.5 hour ride then took us out to the countryside to see farming, vineyards, ancient sites, and so much more. It's true that not much is open today due to Good Friday, but we still saw so much. A religious area, flags are flown at half staff for the Good Friday death of Jesus. We did have an enjoyable lunch along the seaside. I would definitely come back to Malta, there is much to see and do!
